Bible Reading - Week 45

WEEK 45

This week you will complete your reading of the Gospels and move into the book of Acts. You will be reading about the most important turning point in human history, the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

DAY 1 Matthew 26:36-75; Mark 14:32-72; Luke 22:39-71; John 18:1-27

  • Which Gospel writer says that as Jesus prayed in Gethsemane just prior to his arrest that he prayed so intensely his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground?
  • Which Gospel gives the name of the high priest’s servant whose ear Peter cut off? Which Gospel tells us that Jesus touched his ear and healed him?
  • Which Gospel reveals that after the authorities arrested Jesus, they also tried to capture a young man who fled from them naked?
  • Which three Gospels inform us that after Peter denied the Lord he wept?

 

DAY 2 Matthew 27:1-31; Mark 15:1-20; Luke 23:1-25; John 18:28-19:16

  • How do we know Judas regretted his decision to betray Jesus?
  • What sorts of mistreatments does Jesus receive even before he is crucified?
  • Do Pilate and Herod find any valid reason to crucify Jesus?
  • According to John’s Gospel, what reason does Jesus give for why his servants don’t fight to protect him?
  • In John’s Gospel, who do the Jews declare to be their king?

 

DAY 3 Matthew 27:32-66; Mark 15:21-47; Luke 23:26-56; John 19:17-42; Psalm 22

  • Three Gospels tell us that Simon of Cyrene carried Jesus’ cross. Which one tells us the names of his sons?

 

 

 

  • Which Gospel informs us that after Jesus died the tombs opened and many saints were raised?
  • Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Jewish Sanhedrin, buried Jesus. According to John’s Gospel, what other important person in Jewish religious life assisted him?
  • Why is Psalm 22 appropriate to read along with the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ crucifixion?
  • Reflect today on the importance of the crucifixion for your life and also for the world.

 

DAY 4 Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20-21

  • Today’s readings conclude your reading of the Gospels. Celebrate that they end on the positive note of Jesus’ resurrection.
  • What task does Jesus leave with his disciples?
  • How does Jesus prove to his disciples after his resurrection that he is really alive?
  • What is the purpose of the signs of Jesus written in the Gospel of John?

 

DAY 5 Acts 1-4; Psalm 110

  • Notice as you read today what an impact the Holy Spirit makes on the lives of the early disciples. Make note of what differences you find.
  • What does Barnabas mean?
  • What does Psalm 110 predict will happen to kings and nations that oppose the Lord?

 

DAY 6 Acts 5-8

  • Why do Ananias and Sapphira suddenly drop dead? What important lesson does this teach the church?
  • Why do the high priest and those belonging to the party of the Sadducees arrest the apostles? What happens next?
  • Who will Peter and the apostles obey first and foremost?
  • How does the problem with the widows get resolved in chapter 6?
  • What happens to Stephen?
  • What does Philip do for the Ethiopian eunuch?
