Bible Reading - Week 44

WEEK 44

The readings this week deal with the final days of Jesus’ life before his crucifixion. His focus is on preparing his disciples for what is to come.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

John 14:6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

DAY 1 Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; John 11:55-12:36; Matthew 21:1-22; Mark 11:1-25; Luke 19:28-48; John 2:13-25

  • What point is Jesus making with the perfume incident that the disciples, especially Judas, are overlooking?
  • Why does Jesus cleanse the temple?

DAY 2 Matthew 21:23-22:14; Mark 11:27-12:12; Luke 20:1-18; John 12:37-50

  • Why will tax collectors and prostitutes enter God’s kingdom before the chief priests and elders?
  • According to the parable of the vineyard, who will inherit God’s kingdom?
  • In the parable of the wedding banquet, why are those invited to the banquet not worthy?
  • The one who rejects Jesus and doesn’t receive his saying will be judged by what on the last day?

DAY 3 Matthew 22:15-23:39; Mark 12:13-44; Luke 20:19-21:4; 13:31-35

  • Why can’t Jesus gather the children of Jerusalem together?

DAY 4 Matthew 24-25; Mark 13; Luke 21:15-38

  • Today’s readings focus on Christ’s return.
  • What sorts of things does Jesus predict will precede his coming and the end of the age?

  • What kind of servants will be blessed when Jesus returns?
  • What mistake do the foolish virgins make? What does it cost them?
  • What do the servants with five and talents and two talents do differently than the servant with only one talent?
  • What happens in the end to the servant with one talent?
  • What differentiates the sheep and the goats?
  • How can you keep from having the day of the Lord’s return come on you unexpectantly?

DAY 5 Matthew 26:1-5, 14-35; Mark 14:1-2, 10-31; Luke 22:1-38; John 13

  • As you read about Judas betraying Jesus, which two Gospels report that Satan/the devil was at work in Judas?
  • Notice that Matthew, Mark, and Luke make clear that Jesus shares the Last Supper with his disciples while knowing full well who will betray him when he is arrested.
  • Why do you think at such a serious time the disciples are concerned about who should be considered the greatest?
  • Why does Jesus wash the disciples’ feet?

DAY 6 John 14-17

  • What will keep you from having a troubled heart?
  • If you’ve seen Jesus, who else have you also seen?
  • What will the Holy Spirit do when he comes?
  • How can a believer produce fruit?
  • How do people prove they are disciples of Jesus?
  • How do they remain in Jesus’ love?
  • Why does the world hate believers?
  • Why is it beneficial for disciples of Jesus to go to the Father?
  • Despite suffering in this world, believers can be courageous. Why?

Since Jesus is returning to the Father, what sorts of things does he pray for his disciples?
