Bible Reading - Week 26

WEEK 26

This week you will be challenged to keep track of several kings. Sadly, the godly ones are few and far between. On the final day you will read the exciting saga of Jonah.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Jonah 3:10 God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways—so God relented from the disaster he had threatened them with. And he did not do it.

DAY 1 2 Kings 5:1-8:15

  • What does Elisha do for Naaman? Why does Naaman initially get angry when Elisha tells him what to do to get clean of his skin disease?
  • Why do you think Gehazi insists on getting payment from Naaman?
  • In what ways do we see God at work in Elisha in chapter 6?
  • Take note of how Elisha urges the king of Israel to have mercy on his enemies. Pray that God will move you and others to be more merciful.
  • Can you imagine things ever getting so desperate you would resort to eating a child (6:29)? Thank God for the gift of living in a country where food is abundant.
  • What evil does Elisha foresee Hazael committing?

DAY 2 2 Kings 8:16-29; 2 Chronicles 21:1-22:9

  • Pay attention to the lasting negative impact of King Ahab’s example on the leaders who followed him. Pray for the Lord to help you to be a positive influence on those who follow you.
  • What does Jehoram do when he becomes king?  What does the letter from Elijah warn will happen to Jehoram? How do people feel when he dies?

DAY 3 2 Kings 9-11; 2 Chronicles 22:10-23:21

  • What is Jehu anointed as king to do?
  • When Jehu finishes his purge of the prophets of Baal, what do he and his men turn the temple of Baal into?
  • Note that despite Jehu’s great zeal to rid the land of the evil influence of Ahab, he is not careful to follow the Lord’s instruction with all his heart. Be sure to ask the Lord to give you a heart that is fully devoted to him.
  • How old is Joash when he becomes king?

DAY 4 2 Kings 12-13; 2 Chronicles 24

  • What project is Joash working on when King Hazael of Aram/Syria plans to attack him? What does Joash do that causes his servants to conspire against him and kill him?
  • Make sure you don’t fail to see how many times the sins of Jeroboam keep getting mentioned. This is a vivid reminder that one person’s bad influence can have a negative impact on generations to follow. Ask the Lord to help you to have the opposite impact for generations to come.

DAY 5 2 Kings 14-15; 2 Chronicles 25-27

  • After Amaziah becomes king he puts to death the servants who had killed his father Joash, but not their children. Why not? See Deuteronomy 24:16.
  • Continue to make note of how often a new king comes to power and the text notes that he did evil like Jeroboam.
  • What does Amaziah do with the gods of the Seirites which causes the Lord’s anger to burn against him? What happens to Amaziah in the end because of this?
  • What foolish thing does King Uzziah do? What does the Lord afflict him with as a consequence of his rebellion?

DAY 6 Jonah 1-4

  • As you read Jonah’s story today, try to think of how you might retell it to a six-year-old. What questions do you think a young child might have about the story? If you have a young child in your family, try to make time to share the story of Jonah with him or her.
  • Why do you think Jonah is in the Bible? How many reasons can you find?
