Bible Reading - Week 23

WEEK 23

The readings for this week will take you to the height of Solomon’s power and to his greatest achievement, the construction of the temple.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Proverbs 23:12  Apply yourself to discipline and listen to words of knowledge.

DAY 1 Proverbs 21-24

  • As you read today’s section from Proverbs, recognize these chapters cover a wide range of topics.  Try to spend enough time with each proverb that you capture its meaning, but single out one or two to meditate on throughout the day.  Think about how to live by the truth of the one or two you pick out.
  • Please understand that the proverbs cannot benefit you much if you read them hastily.  They yield their richest treasure only to those who will give them the thoughtful contemplation they demand.

DAY 2 1 Kings 5-6; 2 Chronicles 2-3

  • What materials does Solomon use to build the temple?
  • How many men does Solomon assign to work on the temple?
  • What are the dimensions of the temple?  How does its size compare to modern church buildings?
  • How long does it take to build the temple?

DAY 3 1 Kings 7-8; Psalm 11

  • Notice that Solomon spends more time on his own palace than on the temple.  Also, notice his palace is larger than the temple.  Do you think this indicates anything about Solomon’s commitment to the Lord?
  • Compare 1 Kings 8:10-12 with Exodus 40:34-38.  What similar event occurs at the completion of both the temple and the tabernacle?
  • Take note of Solomon’s prayer after the completion of the temple.  It is a great prayer.  Sadly, Solomon will later depart from such sincere devotion to the Lord, a vivid reminder that we must remain diligent in our devotion to the Lord.
  • How does Psalm 11 motivate you to pursue sincere devotion to the Lord?

DAY 4 2 Chronicles 4-7; Psalm 134, 136

  • Try to visualize the various utensils being placed in the temple as you read.  Then try to picture the priests and the singers worshiping until the glory of the Lord fills the temple and the priests have to stop.  How awesome that must have been!
  • What happens when Solomon finishes praying?
  • How many cattle and sheep are sacrificed at the dedication of the temple?
  • What does the Lord warn Solomon will happen if he turns away from the Lord?
  • Be sure to take time today to obey Psalm 134 and 136.

DAY 5 Psalm 146-150

  • Notice that each of today’s psalms begins with a  call to praise the Lord (Hallelujah!)
  • Look as you read for how these psalms suggest that you praise the Lord and for what to praise him for.  Be sure to praise him today!

DAY 6 1 Kings 9; 2 Chronicles 8; Proverbs 25-26

  • It is worth noting well the stern warning the Lord gives to Solomon.  Be sure to pray for strength to heed this warning yourself.
  • Which of the proverbs in today’s reading are most helpful to you right now?  Thank God for them and ask him to help you live by them.
