The Gospel is for Sharing

THE GOSPEL IS FOR SHARING

Please read the following quote carefully:

“…I’ve always said, you know, that I don’t respect people who don’t proselytize. I don’t respect that at all. If you believe that there’s a heaven and hell, and people could be going to hell, or not getting eternal life or whatever, and you think that, well, it’s not really worth telling them this because it would make it socially awkward… How much do you have to hate somebody to not proselytize? How much do you have to hate somebody to believe that everlasting life is possible and not tell them that? I mean, if I believed beyond a shadow of a doubt that a truck was coming at you, and you didn’t believe it, and that truck was bearing down on you, there is a certain point where I tackle you. And this is more important than that…”[1]

Who do you think made these remarks? Billy Graham? Rick Warren? Mother Theresa? Actually it was the outspoken atheist Penn Jillette, one half of the comic-magician duo Penn & Teller. He made these comments after meeting a man who approached him at the end of a show. At first the man gave Penn some genuine complements about the show. Then the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a Gideon Bible and gave it to Penn. Penn was so impressed with the integrity and sincerity of the man that he felt compelled to post a YouTube video to praise him for courageously attempting to share the gospel with him.

Maybe it’s been a while since you shared the gospel with someone. It could be that you tried and really messed it up. Maybe you never have. Well, today is a new day. You don’t have to look far to find an unbeliever. Pray and ask God to open up an opportunity to share his truth with someone and watch him answer that prayer. Then do it. Share the gospel. It’s what Jesus saved you for (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8). We dare not keep the best news in the world to ourselves.
